While trying to connect I get the following error: Access to the resource is forbidden

Some users describe getting Access to the resource is forbidden error message when connecting Power BI with data resources.

Reasons:

  • SSO enabled. While internal Jira users are able to authenticate on Power BI Desktop, SSO users are receiving authentication errors. Try solution.

  • Wrong credentials. During the first connection, wrong credentials were provided and saved for Data Source.

  • Captcha at Jira’s side. A rare case that may arise after several unsuccessful attempts to access the Data Source from Power BI Desktop providing the wrong password.

 

How to fix the Access to the resource is forbidden error if wrong credentials were provided?

 

Solution:

  1. At the top-left corner of Power BI Desktop, select the File tab.

  2. Select Options, and then select Settings.

  3. Select Data Source Settings.

  4. Select the data source the “Access to the resource is forbidden” error arises for.

  5. From the drop-down menu, select the Clear Permissions option.

  6. Select the Close button.

Afterward, you can re-enter the correct credentials when connecting the data source using Basic authentication.

 

How to fix the Access to the resource is forbidden error if a captcha appeared?

 

Solution:

  1. Log out from Jira and try to login again.

  2. Confirm Captcha during the login if present.

  3. Alternatively, Jira Admin can always check and confirm the captcha under the User Management admin section.

Afterward, provide valid credentials when trying to connect the required data source through Basic authentication.
