WebAuthn (Web Authentication) is a web standard published by W3C in 2019.

WebAuthn enables passwordless authentication between servers, browsers, and authenticators. WebAuthn is supported on Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari.

Requirements

In order to add the credentials (security keys or fingerprints) your instance should have HTTPS protocol enabled.

Enabling U2F support in Mozilla Firefox

While FIDO U2F support was added with the release of Firefox Quantum, the feature is turned off by default. In order to enable U2F support in Firefox Quantum, follow the steps below:

  1. Type "about:config" (without quotes) into the Firefox address bar and press Enter

  2. Search for “u2f”

  3. Double-click on security.webauth.u2f to enable U2F

Register Credential for passwordless authentication

  • (1) Click User menu at the upper-right navigation corner

  • (2) Click WebAuthn Configuration

  • (3) Make sure you enabled U2F support if you use Mozilla browser

  • (4) Click to add new credential

After successful credential registration (7) user can add more credentials (8) or delete credentials that was added (9)

If administrator changed settings and user can’t login into instance using WebAuthn he can use default login (us​ername and password).

It is achieved by clicking Cancel in platform-depending prompt on login page.
